Monash Parking Woes – Information Session recap

Hanny's articleBy Hanny Kee

On Tuesday 30 April 2013, Mr. Pang Koon Tuck, the Executive Director of Monash University Sunway Campus (MUSC) held an information session. The MUSC community was notified of the major projects going on around Bandar Sunway that will directly affect us, namely, the construction of an underpass linking Sunway South Quay to the new basement car park in Sunway University. The other project is the BRT project which will link most parts of Bandar Sunway with the upcoming LRT lines.

The BRT project will have 7 stops:

  1. Near the Seri Setia KTM Station
  2. Near Pangsapuri Makmur
  3. At Jalan Lagoon Timur
  4. Outside Sunway Medical Center
  5. Outside Monash University
  6. Near Mydin USJ 1
  7. Near USJ 7

The commencement of these projects have not only caused traffic congestion, but also the loss of more than 100 car park bays in the Western Car Park of MUSC. Both projects are expected to reach completion by early 2014 and will be available for use by late 2014.

In view of that, the following solutions have thus been announced by the MUSC management:

  1. The oxidation pond near MUSC will be converted into an elevated car park which will offer around 1600 parking bays.
  2. The management of Sunway Pyramid has offered season passes to MUSC students at a rate of RM 50 per month (weekdays only). Students who are interested should visit this website to obtain the exact procedure of getting the season pass.
    • MUSC has also set up a shuttle bus service that will ferry students to and from Sunway Pyramid. Visit this website to obtain the route and the time-table for this service.
    • The use of the canopy walk linking MUSC to Sunway Pyramid has been stressed as well.
  3. The MUSC community has been advised to engage in carpooling activities in order to ease congestion.
  4. Although the management of MUSC generally advises the students not to park their cars at the unused highway near the Western car park, no punishment will be meted out to students if they park there so long as no further construction work is done there.

Students as well as other members of the MUSC community may have a look at this document should they wish to read up more on these projects.
