Speak Out For Engineering (SOfE) Malaysia National Finals 2013

On the 7th of December 2013, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Malaysia and IMechE Monash University Malaysia (MUM) Student Chapter jointly organized one of the most prestigious public speaking competitions in the engineering industry, Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Malaysia National Finals 2013.

Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE), a competition organised for engineers, by engineers, is conducted annually by the IMechE Volunteer Network. It was established to challenge young engineers to prove that they could ‘communicate effectively’, an important area for today’s developing engineers. Basically, in the competition, the speaker should give an individual oral presentation on a subject relating to mechanical engineering for not more than 20 minutes, followed by a 10 minutes Q&A session from the audience.

Since its inception in 1964, this year, for the first time, IMechE Monash University Malaysia (MUM) Student Chapter was proud to be the host of this national level competition.

Affiliate members of IMechE from reputed engineering institutions namely, Monash University Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, INTI International University, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Tenaga Nasional and Saturn Pyro Sdn Bhd participated in this competition.

The esteemed judges for this competition were Miss SKL Walia, Distinguished Toastmaster Member, Mr. Alex Yu, President of IEM Toastmasters and Mr. Alireza Parpaei, Runner-up of SOfE Asia Competition 2013.

This event was graced by the presence of honourable guests from ImechE Malaysia. They were Dr. Teoh Kok Soo, Chairman IMechE Malaysia, Dr. Albert Tshai, YMS Chairman IMechE Malaysia and Ir. Mathew Thomas, Treasurer IMechE Malaysia.

Winners, Participants and Judges

After intense competition and amazing presentations by the talented speakers, Dr. Chong Cheng Tung from UTM was crowned champion for his presentation on the topic ‘Spray Combustion Characteristics of Biodiesel under Gas Turbine Conditions’. The runner-up title was awarded to Yohann Ian Selvarajoo from Monash University Malaysia for the topic ‘Bionic Prosthetics’. The champion received the SOfE Trophy, £300 plus certificate while the runner-up received £200 plus certificate. The champion will also be representing Malaysia for the SOfE South East Asia Regional Competition 2014.

At the end of the event, Mr. Alireza Parpaei commented “Thanks to IMechE Malaysia, I had the honour of being a panel judge alongside two well-known and experienced toastmasters presenters, Mr. Alex Lu and Miss SKL Walia. IMechE Monash University Malaysia (MUM) Student Chapter, that was the best SOfE I’ve been a part of. Thanks for your hard work and a job well done.”
