TEDX
The annual TEDxMUM event, themed “Now is the time to go beyond” has been pushed back to the 17th of November 2023, with early bird tickets worth RM10 currently on sale. Although some of you may be wondering: “Wouldn’t this clash with Monash Ball?”, well you’re right and wrong in a way…
THE UNCERTAINTY OF MONASH BALL
Although it had been previously stated in MUSA DID WHAT 8 that Monash Ball would take place on November 18th, there have been some sudden change of plans from the Activities department. The ball, which was initially pitched to take place at the Mandarin Oriental, payment concerns have resulted in a likely venue change. Due to this, the tentative dates for Monash Ball have been changed to the 26th of November or the 17th of December. This has resulted in immense frustration amongst the student body, especially those who may have to make travel arrangements at the end of the year.
This flurry of concerns was brought up by HAC and 2022’s Activities Chairperson Niraen, who questioned the management and organization of the event. He was incredibly worried about the possibility of delaying what is arguably one of MUSA’s largest events of the year, especially given his previous experience heading the event, it was far too late into the month for so many important details to be still left up in the air. This then led to a tense discussion amongst the HAC and MSC members, which had to eventually be calmed down by the President as well as the General Secretary. In order not to escalate the situation, it was proposed that internal discussion take place with the Executive Committee as well as the Activities Department in order to troubleshoot any problems. The results of these discussions would then be tabled at the next MSC.
MUISS WEBSITE
An official MUISS website is currently being discussed and headed by the MUISS Media team, with their subcommittee currently hard at work building up the foundations of the web page. However, Publicity Officer Jackson and HAC member Alfa had their reservations about this proposal as it had only been brought up recently and that it may be too rushed, given that the initial launch of the website was targeted to be the 7th of November. They also pointed out that there was still the possibility of malicious attacks towards the website which may compromise its functionality, especially as the website would not be backed up or supported by Monash’s internal servers.
THE ELECTION COMMISSION MAY HAVE FUMBLED THE(IR) BAG
With the elections over, the votes tallied and the positions announced, one would believe that the drama is finally over right? Not in the least. (For those interested, the full report can be found here)
Although most of the process had gone smoothly, one of the biggest hiccups was still the removal of Gido as General Secretary candidate for 2024. Unfortunately, the Election Commission, at the time, did not reveal any details about his status during the election process, during their last report they merely said that he had breached some of the rules set by the Commission. However, Gido has requested a tribunal for reconsideration. The tribunal has yet to respond to this request, thus the Election Commission is unable to completely conclude the elections for the year 2023, rendering their report incomplete as pointed out by Dominic Lee, President of MUSA 2022. An hour long heated question and answer session then took place which resulted in a lot more confusion for everyone gathered due to the technical nature and jargon of the entire process.
CONCLUSION
Unfortunately, these delays have resulted in most of the other departments being unable to present their reports. The MSC will have to reconvene as soon as possible in order to clear up all the ambiguity in addition to tabling the rest of the business reports from Editors, Welfare, Wom*ns and the School Representatives. With that in mind, let us all hope that MSC# 9.2, will not be as dramatic as MSC# 3, 3.2, 7 and 7.2 although at this point it looks like its no holds barred anymore.
